Breathwork FAQs
I love this question. When I say ‘it meets you where you are at’ i mean it. Have you ever had an experience in life where afterward you go “that was exactly what I needed and didnt even know I needed it!” Its that. The people the feel they need to have a huge emotional release often times just end up smiling and feeling REALLY good the whole time. The session met them with ‘you’ve done enough hurting, heres whats next for you.’ They leave feeling inspired and clear. Those that feel lost often have tons of seemingly unrelated thoughts and memories come up and in one big emotional expression it all connects. The moral? Your subconscious and body will only bring up what it knows you need and are ready for. It finds your edge.
Not inherently. If there is unfelt/unresolved trauma that you are seeking to resolve and your physical and subconscious is ready to, then yes it absolutely can! This healing modality will find your edges but never unearth what isnt being sought after.
If they serve no purpose and are not a part of your intentions - no.
This is the most beautiful and complex question. There are so many kinds. I would point you back to the services page where you can read about my process and/or watch the 4 minute clip on how the shamanic transformative breath works scientifically and spiritually.
Absolutely. In fact, Ive had clients say before it felt physiologically similar to the onset of a panic attack and that they felt very empowered to move through the anxiety in a safe space with powerful intentions. When alkalosis sets in and you are in your process, the anxiety should evaporate. This process is all about touch points… Meaning - thoughts, emotions, memories, knowings will come and they will go. You are not engaging with them the same way you do in everyday conscious waking life.
Clarity. Wisdom. Remembering your value, mission, or purpose. A feeling of a physiological weight lifted. Releasing old patterns, beliefs, and repressed emotions.
Expect to feel more in tune. The preceding weeks or days before your session youll start to see your intention more clearly, you may start to feel anxious, nervous, or excited. This is just your subconscious preparing for the event! After the session expect to feel lighter, clear in your vision, calm, connected, and inspired. Some people feel like theyre on a pink cloud for a few days. Depends on your session.
I love this question. The process of alkalosis is in full swing in shamanic transformative deep healing breathwork sessions - its a mouthful and a crazy experience. During the specific three part breath pattern we do (belly, chest, exhale) your body drops into alkalosis. Thai is where your body is expelling more carbon dioxide at a quicker rate than usual. Carbon dioxide is the waste the cells of our body hold so is a rapid-clearing of anything that isnt healthy for your cells, and your body. (think emotions, physical pain, ailments, past trauma, blockages, blocks etc.) In this state your logical mind is subdued to shift the bodys energy expenditure to healing. This is vital because typically - humans want to understand their emotions intellectually. When the mind is subdued, your spiritual element is able to step in. Your soul & body are able to commune clearly without the chatter of the brain and self-perpetuation of being in painful emotions. This is where it gets hard to explain and becomes more of an experience. The body sets the stage for spirit to come in and ‘cook’ as the kids are saying nowadays.
Love this question and you’ll hate the answer - its intuitive. I have clients who do a session once a year and others who do them every couple of months because they love the feeling and clarity. If you are in the middle of something big and need the extra support to process through it we can do as often as every week and a half to two weeks. This time frame will allow for integration and change to take place before revisiting the healing space with new information. But again, this is an intuitive question and is up to you. I will help guide you by asking questions that you can tune into and we will get a good schedule made for you.
Yes. It is totally okay to do while on your period and in fact right before or during can aid in tapping that ‘release’ energy. Same goes for ovulation and follicular phase - it can enhance the clarity and ‘receiving’ side of breathwork.
No. Well not no, but I strongly recommend avoiding breathwork while you are pregnant. The process of alkalosis pulls the majority of your body's energy into clearing and healing. Pregnancy requires a lot of energy and creation of course, and we don't want to redirect any of the energy going into the growth of your baby.
No, again not a firm no but tetany and rapid movement of energy when your blood vessels and arteries already have a lot of pressure can be damaging. If you feel strongly that you need a breathwork session as an important modality of your healing, I recommend having a conversation with your doctor first, then you and I can discern how to make this a safe space for you. I do have a couple of clients with health conditions and by slowing the breath way down we are still able to achieve the healing and spiritual benefits of breathwork without pushing the physical body too hard.
Consult with your medical provider before practicing the shamanic transformative breath is you have, or have a history of: cardiovascular disease, angina, asthma, heart attack, high blood pressure, glaucoma, retinal detachment, osteoporosis, recent injury or surgery, any condition for which you take regular medications, history of panic attacks or psychosis, severe mental illness, seizure disorders, family history of aneurysms, or pregnancy.
Yes. I have done this work on a few different medications and have had clients on all kinds of medications while in breathwork practice. I advise reaching out to your provider and making sure there are no chance of side effects with your specific medication. Be informed.
